Right from the start of the story I was captivated and could fully imagine the scenery, the characters, the world that was building. That’s one thing I will say about this story, it’s rather easily to follow and pulls you into a new world, making it almost cinematic.

The thing I will say about this story is that for me it was a very slow burn and it didn’t start to get interesting until around 75% of the way and then it got rather boring again, I wasn’t interested in the ending of the story, it didn’t give a wow factor, in fact maybe even ended disappointing even… I think that was due to it feeling very rushed towards the last few chapters. It got so good when Fayre was participating in that first trial game and made me really imagine it all but then after that it just felt really rushed. Not sure I would have finished the story tbh if I had read the physical book just because it was such a long slow burn and I don’t want to read a book that doesn’t get good until it’s practically finished but I get it takes time to build up the characters and worlds etc but I think I would have DNF it if I had read physically read it but I’m glad I kept going with the audiobook. I thought Jennifer Ikeda done a brilliant job narrating it.

From the start I just really didn’t like Feyre. I found her rather annoying, immature and just didn’t LOVE her character even though she was the main character so for me I just couldn’t connect with her. I found the beginning repetitive too. The constant some vocabulary throughout, like seriously how many times can someone CLICK THEIR TONGUE 😭

I didn’t even love Feyre and Tamlin together. It was forced and I can’t really remember when they fell in love and before I knew it she’s fighting for his and her life in that mountain like when, why, where and how?? I thought Feyre had more chemistry with Lucien and I actually was secretly rooting for them to get together 😅 and especially during the trials he was so sweet with her. Yes Rhysand is out of this world sexy but he’s a sociopath and even though I wasn’t very fond of Feyre the whole faerie wine and lap dancing scenes were random, disgusting and cruel.

I will continue with the series as I did find it easy to follow and tbh I fell in love with Prythian, like forget the lame characters I just wanna live in that beautiful world.

Also, as brutal as she was I actually found Amarantha an interesting character and I liked how a female was such a powerful character. I found her so easy to imagine from her description. In fact I found a lot of the characters just so easy to imagine tbh and that’s what I overall really did enjoy about this story.

Favourite quote: “And your hair is…clean.” Perhaps it was my raging hunger making me hallucinate the piss-poor attempt at flattery.'

Favourite chapter: 36, 40, 44

Just meh! This series is so hyped up. I have been hearing about it for years and years. I guess I was expecting too much, but for me, it was just on the side of not bad. There were parts I really enjoyed and parts I didn't much care for. I mostly read rom-coms, so let's just take these things through that lens.

1) It was remarkably violent. I've skimmed the reviews of others where they said they wish it was more gruesome and gory. Obviously these people must read some hardcore violent books, because to me, this almost put me over the edge of what I was able to tolerate. A couple descriptions that happeed while I was eating a snack made me literally spit out my food and stop eating because they grossed me out so badly.

2) It wasn't really original...clearly meant to be Beauty and the Beast like, I didn't get the chemistry from our mains at all. I have no real reason to believe that Tamlin and Feyre would have fallen for one another, let alone been "in love".

3) I do think she did a good job with some of the mystery of things. At least, I didn't guess where stuff was going on some of those major plot points.

4) The cruelty and different social conventions of the fairies was well written I feel like. It didn't feel like they were just slightly mean humans to me. I did gather that they had an entirely different set of morals governing them.

5) Let's just talk about the spice for a minute. I've seen people slam this book as basically just erotica or porn. Did I accidentally read an abridged version that only left out the "erotic" scenes? Again, I mostly read stuff in the romance realm and this book was as vanilla as it gets. I barely noticed that their were (2) sex scenes in it at all. In what world is this considered spicy? Is it appropriate for young adults, where I have heard it has been shelved? No, absolutely not. But to call it erotica would indicate to me that you are incredibly prudish in your view of literature.

I haven't decided yet if I am going to continue on with the series. But it never ceases to amaze me which mediocre books become rock stars while absolute fantastic pieces go by unnoticed.

Just too painful to keep going - cliche, trite, and honestly just really badly written. I couldn't plough through with this garbage Beauty and the Beast reimagining. And the horrible, abusive "romance" stuff made me want to throw my phone away. Don't bother.

I struggled with this one. Interesting world building, and quite a few surprise plot twists that kept me guessing. However the heroine was frustratingly lacking in self reflection and reads very, very young. The “love” story feels more like Stockholm syndrome. There are also quite a few problematic consent moments.
