This wonderful little book reflects on the journey of Laika, Russia's first dog in space. Something that gets me the most is "what might have been" and this book really hit it for me. The pictures of Laika as a pup being picked up on off the street and Laelaps and Sirius talking about how mankind suffers and experiences joy...goddamn.

Dossett encourages readers to think about the big things with such a small piece. Laika's death was a tragedy and symbolic of human ambition. But we wouldn't know about Laika without her journey. She wouldn't be among the stars or there wouldn't be statues of her without the tragedy of her life and her contribution—she would just be another unknown street dog. What would have been better?

I loved the art. The white ink on black background was my favorite. The use of nature and leaves throughout with Laika's journey was beautiful with the symbolism in the end:

Have you seen the flowers they cut and bring inside? Even to the end they smell sweet.

A lovely, lovely little book. What amazing, creative things one can do to encourage big, all encapsulating thoughts. An amazing little book with big things like space, dogs, destiny, and what it all means for us in the end.

"Laika" will give you the beautiful sensation of having your heart on the outside of your body, and will remind you, for the thousandth time, why humans don't deserve dogs. The world is richer for this telling of this story. And the world is richer for Laika.
