Tough read.
As a Jewish person in today’s wretched global climate, I found it particularly hard.
It’s like a fictional reminder of very very real prejudices that Jews have faced since the beginning of time it seems.

Had a lot of trouble getting into this or caring about Hannah. I also think it would have been more interesting if the history of the book went in chronological order instead of reverse chronological order. Only some of the flashbacks were interesting and, again, Hannah's story was just annoying. Her relationship with her mom, the unnecessary drama with her father, the super rushed love affair, all of it was just annoying.
That said, some of the historical storylines were great and the idea of getting historical information from book conservation was a unique take.

Beautifully written, deeply human, holding out a reckless hope for the future.

I've really enjoyed the two books I've read by this author. I will definitely be on the look out for more from her.

I loved this book! I could really relate to the protagonist, who is a scientist and a bit of an artist, and I loved how the author weaved together information about Jewish history and persecution with the tragedy and persecution that happened in Sarajevo. It was so well written and speaks volumes about the need for tolerance among different types of people, and how that often does not happen.
