Slower paced but rock solid, definitely the start of the series slowing to a crawl though.

Again this book continues the three interwoven stories that kicked off in the last book with Rand trying to repel an invasion at Altara, Aybara battling the Prophet of the Dragon and Trakand and co taking on the Dark One's heat wave before taking on an invasion of their own. There's much more action in this one making it a more gripping read although Jordan still enjoys including plenty of detail for his readers. The politics of these lands takes more of a back seat which was rather pleasant as you could just lose yourself in the action with having to keep trap of various intrigues which has been a prinicple part of some of the previous books. A pretty damn good read all told.

A lot happened in this book, no matter what anyone says. Hell, a lot happens in every book (no matter what everyone says) :D
Epic battles, the heating up of romance, a major blow struck against the Dark One (with the Bowl of Winds and Atha'an Miere windfinders as the main tools), kidnappings of loved ones and some bitch-slapping from Egwene to the extremely irritating Sitters she's had to put up with since being named Amyrlin.
In short, I loved this book, and don't care what anyone else says. :P

I’m hesitant to even give 3 stars because some parts of this book were so boring or miserable to read. I’m still glad I read it and some parts and chapters were so good! The ending fell flat and was disappointing which is unlike Robert Jordan, honestly.
Elayne & Nynaeve along with their group of Aes Sedai and Kinswomen and Sea Folk use the bowl of winds to reverse the unnatural heat brought on by the dark one. They continue onto Caemlyn where Elayne takes the Lion throne.
Perrin moves to stop the Prophet Masema but while he’s gone the Shaido attack camp and capture Faile & Morgase (who Faile and Perrin have unknowingly taken on as servants).
Rand and Bashere lead the armies to attack the Seanchan. They defeat them but when they move to take Ebou Dar, Rand uses Callandor. But without knowing of Callandor’s flaw (needing two women to help channel with him), the sword essentially makes him insane temporarily and he kills some of the Asha’man himself. When they return to Cairhen, he is attacked by Dashiva, an Asha’man who is one of the Forsaken resurrected by the Dark Lord.
Egwene and the little Tower declare war on Elaida. By maneuvering them into this decision, she is given ultimate authority relating to the war and the Aes Sedai are forced to stop trying to manipulate her and follow her decrees. At the end of the book they arrive in Tar Valon to begin the siege.
So far here’s the list of people who are against Rand either to kill or control him:
- The Dark Lord
- the Forsaken
- The Black Ajah & other darkfriends
- Shado Aiel
- Whitecloaks
- Elaida & the White Tower
- Seanchan
- The Prophet (technically he’s vocally for Rand obviously but he clearly has his own motives and he’s making problems)
People on the good side:
- Rand (mostly)
- Aiel (9 septs?)
- Min & Aviendha
- Matt & Telmanes (Olver)
- Perrin & Faile (Manatheren, Morgase)
- Sea Folk
- Little Tower mostly (Egwene, Elayne, Nynaeve/ Lan)
- Cairhen / Ilian / Caemlyn kinda mostly ish
It doesn’t really feel even.

I feel like a lot of things happened but nothing ACTUALLY happened? Lol. I took a break between 7 and 8 so keeping up with all these new names were a drag
