one of the best books i have ever read!!! felt immersive the same way donna tart’s novels are. while learning about the fictional characters you were also simultaneously learning about the very real life issues people in appalachia face every day. i was having stress dreams about drug use while reading because it all feels so real!!!!

This book reminds me why I just stick with fantasy/sci-fi. Real life stuff is just so heavy.
The first third of this book hooked me. And then the middle was a slog. Towards the end it picked up the pace and skipped over a bunch of bases to the end.  Having never read David Copperfield I wasn’t sure if that was Kingsolvers doing or her sticking to Dickens original blueprint.
All in all, I enjoyed Demon’s POV. But I pretty much spent the whole book wanting to hug or shake him. So maybe it did it’s job. But truly my heart was with Tommy the whole time.

This was excellent. This novel made me smile, it made my stomach hurt, it frustrated me and it astounded me. I listened to the audiobook and I can say that Demon is not a voice I will forget.

If you’re standing on a small pile of shit- fighting for your one place to stand- god almighty how you fight.
