Recasting Dickens’s David Copperfield, this book is about orphaned Appalachian boy Demon Copperhead, as he loses his parents, bounces around the horrors of the foster care system in rural Kentucky, finds brief success in high school football, and struggle with opioid addiction, all before he turns 18. Everyone Demon knows is just playing the cards they’ve been dealt, and Demon just accepts that his life is and always will be terrible. He’s no better and no worse than anyone else. He does learn about his mixed race ancestors and the way the government and the mining companies worked together to hold down the people. The land economy versus the money economy. He becomes an artist and manages to hold on to a couple of close friends. Maybe he’ll survive long enough to break the crushing cycle of poverty.

Demon is not written as an addict, he is written as a person. As the reader you see how addiction is something that happened TO him. Also, I’m a sucker for a good ending. Proud of you Demon 🫶🏻
