Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🫑 (clean)

Pros: interesting magic system, a different spin on the pied piper lore, a precocious child side character.

Cons: I enjoyed the idea of the characters and the story more than the execution. It didn’t grab me, but we coasted along together.

I will say it’s impressive work to make a main character who traffics children likable. The twist on the pied piper was unique however the overall character development felt weak. I am usually a fan of dual POV. However I found Marcus’ perspective to be grating and overly dramatized. A critique I have of the first book in the series as well—- the peeks into the male love interests’ perspective feels more like tormented monologues than something that furthers plot or character development.

Overall it’s an okay read. Not something I’ll pick up again but also not something I felt angry about having spent time reading.

Great book. I was disappointed to find the second book didn’t follow the same characters as the first book. I loved Piper, Amnity, and Marcus together and their story. The story moved along well despite a lot of the action bone packed in the last hundred pages; sometimes I feel the story can get lost.
I really am not thrilled with how much was left unanswered in the book knowing the next book in the series will, just like this one, follow different characters. What’s the kings secret? Why does Marcuses sister adore him so? Why is Lydia tracking down Piper? How did Elias get in contact with Lydia? What the heck was Elias’s warning about?  There’s just too much unanswered. In this book, and the previous book. I felt like referencing to the first book happened A LOT and was not necessary. I understand we’re in the same world. I see the map on the first page…. </spoilers> In hopes the author answers some questions in the next book, this book gets 4 stars. If we don’t get answers, I think I will have to lower my rating.
