I heard about this at a comics talk and excitedly expected a headless body or a bodyless dick going around slaying a rake of demons, so was slightly disappointed when he ended up having a souped up samurai bod but ended up finding it surprisingly funny, heartwarming and innovative for it's time

i did not love it ;/

-i approved of its themes and messages--i liked h's fragmentation, i liked how dororo was SPOILER ALERt trans, i liked the relationship between the two of them. i liked the "down w the samurai! farmers band together!" overall message. i liked how dororo's treasure map lead to explicit instructions to use the treasure to fund the revolution rather than to keep and be rich.

-I did not like how repetitive the demon killing stories were. I'm not usually that picky in that department--i loved ASOE as a kid even tho the formula w count olaf is always the same. i loved NGE even though they kill a new angel every time. but still i kept getting bored or forgetting where i was in the story arc. this is probably because i read the whole thing as one book rather than in episodes or individual books.

-the author of this book was supposedly my obaachan's brother's pal. she used to bring it up and i did not even realize this was by him. this continues in my pattern of inadvertently consuming "first of its kind" media.

-somehow thee drawings kept confusing me , i think because so many characters were drawn similarly + many swashbuckling swishy sword fights that were chaotic.

-i think this translations was a bit cheesy but maybe the original is as well--it was also half a century ago

-i did enjoy how the characters were self aware about being in comic panels and they occasionally broke the books fourth wall. usually dororo did this.

-i need to look more into the role of samurai +fam history before we go to japan

-whu was hyukkumari wanting a normal body so badly when his heightened other skills and prosthetics were serving him just fine? i wonder what a disability theorist would have on this matter......

A gorgeous landmark of an achievement. Tezuka’s style blends the cuddly with the macabre so masterfully. There are panels in this series that’ll surprise you with how drop-dead gorgeous they are.

I could say a lot about the reveal that Dororo is trans. That isn’t me putting a modern term to it. Dororo is undeniably trans, and he remains true to his conviction to the bitter end. It’s done remarkably well at times and horribly in others.
