Got to the story about "The Regular" and it felt long for a short story, and after a while, I read "Mono no Aware" and the other stories just didn't seem interesting. I may pick the book up again eventually, but just not right now.

I don't usually find short story collections interesting, but this book was the exception. Ken Liu combines effortless, beautiful prose with intriguing concepts in science fiction and history.

These short stories are not just science or fantastic stories. These are memories from the past of Asian countries. And it is a face-palm too because there are some which are based on historical events and I have never heard about it. During my historical studies in school we talk about only our own country and the biggest events from all over the world.

We talk about the Holocaust, racism, hierarchy but I have never heard about the unit 731, never heard stories from a Chinese perspective how was the start in the early America. Somehow, these countries are still mysterious and covered with legends in the 21th century.

Thanks a lot for Ken Liu to catch my attention to the details and makes me to ask and to follow up the reality through The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories.

A collection of short stories that range from pure science fiction to fantasy and traditional tales, always with an eastern asian background. In that sense, it touches on multiple aspects of the Chinese heritage - mythology, culture, war, racism, integration in western society and so on.
Some stories are quick and light, some are brutal punches to the stomach to someone who is not aware of Chinese history and culture. They left some lingering thoughts that made me curious to know more about these topics.
