I'm a huge fan of Michael Scott's series. I can't wait to read the next book. I'm loving the way he ties in multiple histories and myth sources to complete his universe.

I enjoyed this second installment to the series. The premise is great, and I like the tension between Josh and Sophie as they grow apart as a result of Sophie's powers. I couldn't help but feel that the writing was a little repetitive at times in terms of word choice, but not in a majorly disturbing way. I'm eager to see how things shape up in the next book.

Listened to this on audio. Loved the narrator. This man knows how to speak in a good accent.

The Magician is the second entry in a deeply frustrating fantasy series. The overarching mythological conceit is smart and appealing, but the character work is dull and forgetful. By my estimation, many YA fantasy novel writers fall into this trap; they misconstrue an engaging environment for an engaging story, but without thoughtfully sketched characters, the story itself devolves into bathos. Regrettably, The Magician makes that same mistake.

Just as good as the first one. I already wrote a kind of long review today for [b:Beautiful Creatures|6304335|Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, # 1)|Kami Garcia|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327873282s/6304335.jpg|6488966] so I think I will do the bulk of this one tomorrow. I did like this one, even though Josh Newman is the most frustrating character in the history of the universe. At least in my universe. Well the most frustrating guy character. There have been plenty of YA females who made me want to ram my head into a brick wall a couple times. Just wanted to let everybody know.

So, I continued this series because it’s one of my boyfriend’s childhood favorites. He said it gets better, and I agree that the second is better than the first. We finally got that pesky exposition out of the way so we could focus on more important things.

To start, Josh’s distrust of Flammel is completely understandable. I’m surprised him and Sophie aren’t asking more questions. Flammel hasn’t been upfront with them at all, so it only makes sense that Josh took things into his own hands. Now, are Josh’s motives entirely pure? Not necessarily, but hey, I get sibling rivalry. Overall, it’s creating a stable groundwork for the arc I can already see happening.

This book was more engaging than the first, but again, I’m not necessarily the target demographic, so the concept isn’t as appealing to me.
