Victoria Thompson has done it again with another installment of her Gaslight mystery series. We continue to follow the unlikely detective duo of Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt as one of the wealthiest men in the city is killed by a bomb. Teddy Roosevelt, who makes a cameo appearance in this novel for the first time, personally assigns Frank to find out whether "anarchists" -- the terrorists of the 1890s -- are behind it, and Frank finds himself caught up in the intrigue of the wealthy Van Dyke family. Only Sarah Brandt and her parents can help him solve the case, as they know better than he does how to navigate the social circles of New York's upper crust.

This was a good mystery. Victoria Thompson kept me guessing about the killer. I intuited the solution early, but then dismissed it as new, confounding evidence came to light, and I absolutely didn't expect the ending to work out the way it did. All the clues are there, like a good Agatha Christie novel, but you have to read carefully to figure it all out.

The returning characters are a treat in this series. I've always liked Frank and Sarah but I've grown quite fond of Mrs Decker (Sarah's mother) as well.

If you like a good period piece or a good mystery -- or if, like me, you like both -- I can highly recommend this novel.

A lot more moralizing, and insufferable family at the centre this time. A quick read, though.

Not as much alone time between Sarah and Frank but there were some interesting new bits of information in the three year old murder of Sarah's husband. It was also fun to see Frank meet two people he surely never expected to meet.

Murder on Marble Row
4 Stars

Detective Frank Malloy is called in when a wealthy industrialist is killed in an explosion. Frank's problems are compounded when he discovers that Sarah Brandt is closely acquainted with the victim's family and insists on aiding in the investigation.

As with the previous books in the series, the twists and turns of the mystery are rather obvious and as such the eventual explanation is not at all surprising. That said, it is entertaining to follow along as Frank and Sarah uncover the clues while attempting to deny their feelings for one another.

More details are forthcoming with regard to the murder of Sarah's husband, and it would seem that there was more to the good doctor than meets the eye.

Looking forward to reading more about Frank and Sarah's forays into murder and mayhem.

I would argue that it is in fact possible to write a turn-of-the-century historical mystery series in which Emma Goldman does *not* turn up and make vaguely threatening anarchist remarks. But no one seems to agree with me.

Midwife Sarah Brandt and police detective Frank Malloy are back to solve the murder of a millionaire business man. When the man is killed by a bomb in his office it looks like the work of anarchists. The victim's oldest son has been disowned by the family and is living with a group of anarchists so that is where attention is first drawn. But things aren't always what they seem.
