This was a really refreshing read. Listening especially, I think all three of the narrators did an incredible job of setting tone and voice of each of the characters and settings. It has one of the most frank and direct discussions of failed suicide that I’ve read, especially in its lack of self pitying flowery language.

I think making all of the characters flawed, some more than others, really helps ground you in their pieces. No one in this book is perfect and that's what makes them all so lifelike.

It was explicitly queer, unapologetically honest, and was a really fun listen.

This is my first Brandon Taylor read! Short story collections are usually not my favorite because I very much need detailed, direct character development to thoroughly get invested in a story. However, I enjoyed many of the stories in this collection and I’m interested to read more of Taylor’s work. This is definitely a dark read with lots of content/trigger warnings; however, since the main theme of the book is how humans seek connection but resort to violence, it was to be expected. I would have liked to see more character development or addressing of core problems, but overall, I enjoyed the collection. The standout for me was Anne of Cleves.

The structure got a little confusing but I loved the idea — having short stories that alternate between a central character and stories of related and unrelated other characters that enrich the themes of the main character

Definitely excited to read more from this author!

I liked this a lot, though I admit to some discomfort with some of the violence. And that feels sort of intentional, theme-wise, which is fine. Ymmv
