After finishing this book I have this sense of raw confusion. It's not unpleasant. It's almost like I'm pulled in and want more but I'm satisfied with the wanting.. almost.

The stories are not quiet disparate but not quite cohesive. I'm in this in between space. Though I like Taylor's writing style and I think I was a bit in the mood for a book that didn't hold my hand the whole time so landed more on the positive side.

Also, the story for which the book is named was so evocative and was so enjoyable to read that I can't rate it too low. This could be a super quick read if you want it to be.

This is my first Brandon Taylor read! Short story collections are usually not my favorite because I very much need detailed, direct character development to thoroughly get invested in a story. However, I enjoyed many of the stories in this collection and I’m interested to read more of Taylor’s work. This is definitely a dark read with lots of content/trigger warnings; however, since the main theme of the book is how humans seek connection but resort to violence, it was to be expected. I would have liked to see more character development or addressing of core problems, but overall, I enjoyed the collection. The standout for me was Anne of Cleves.

The structure got a little confusing but I loved the idea — having short stories that alternate between a central character and stories of related and unrelated other characters that enrich the themes of the main character

Definitely excited to read more from this author!

I find literary fiction a bit hit and miss at times, and found this to be a miss. I thought this was a series of (connected) short stories, but it was more a series of character studies rather than stories with plot. Just not for me.
