This book was beautifully and painstakingly crafted by this author. You can tell all the work she put into creating this piece of art. With characters you feel connected to, this story takes you through WWII in a new way. You see the courage of ordinary people and the lengths the underground resistance took to end a corrupt regime.

I've read fictional WWII books like The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, which are great, but it's really different to read a nonfiction book. It is moving because it is real, not just representative. This story gives a clear chronology of how the Third Reich came to power in Germany and the atrocities they committed (and the negligence of USA/Europe/Russia to be so slow to acknowledge this), while also centering the story on the German resistance fighters. The story of Mildred and her Circle is sad and infuriating, but also so inspiring.
