I really enjoyed this short novellette. It was really well written and completely drew me in to the game. It made me want to watch a boxing match. I was entranced by the rhythm of the words and how it carried throughout the book.

Beautifully written, compelling story, but I HATED the ending!

Usually books that rely on stereotypes bother me, but we need to look at when they were written. There were some gender stereotypes in here, but women were expected to be attracted to sports figures like the men in this book.
I really love reading Jack London’s books. That being said, this book is definitely a product of its time.

the first half: so sad and so true. reminds me of metamorphosis and bartelby and heart of darkness. the second half: way too long. nobody cares about boxing. boring.
maybe that's the point - to show us how we waste our lives on crap that kills us.

This is a cautionary tale, in short story form, and certainly a decent snap-shot of working class 1905 society in the San Francisco Bay Area. A tough young man fails to consider his own mortality while showing off for his young bride-to-be in a prize-fight.

Really unpleasant on a number of levels. Disappointing because I've been a fan of London's other work.
