DNF'd at 68%. There's very little depth or analysis, which feels like an important aspect for a any true crime book. If you've listened to Parcast at all, you've probably gotten more detail from the podcasts. Especially with the more well known cults.

Like another reviewer asked, who is this book for? If you're fascinated by true crime, you generally want to know all the whys and hows. This book just will not satisfy your morbid curiosity. This is more like an introductory overview. Which already exists in podcast form... which they have...? So why make a book?

Also, I can't really place it, but the tone just feels... off. Like the authors were rolling their eyes while writing this.

I think it is a good introduction to cults in modern history however, the book was inconsistent as I sometimes grew uninterested in the pacing and writing. Some chapters were better written than others. Overall, I think the book is insightful and a great book on crime. Would highly recommend if you are someone who isn’t knowledgeable about cults.

This is an excellent anthology that covers several famous cults and their leaders, along with the a brief look at their leaders' motivations and social climates surrounding the cults in their prime (that's a terrible word to describe these deadly abusive situations, but I can't think of another word). Some of the narrators for the audiobook were not as easy to listen to as others, but the content of each cult's overview was informative & comprehensive. I would have liked a more in-depth look at the psychology of the leaders, but Cults is a good introduction for people interested in the phenomenon.

I thought this book was going to be more about the psychological theories regarding why these cult leaders did what they did, but instead it was a really in depth summary of their upbringing and their time as cult leaders. I did learn a lot and was interested in every chapter- just wanted a bit more from this book.
