The stories explore how people react to losing power or (seemingly) getting it in there hands in numerable different ways. Imo the decision to include several (rich white) men as protagonists is not problematic. Yes, we repeatedly see them in positions of disorientation and bewilderment. But that doesn't negate their status, their responsibility for their actions and how those affected other people. What they experience is the result of the toxicity and injustice of their power. Some of them have to experience the sudden absence of their ability to control other people's lives and simply can't stand what is left of them with this key part of their gone. We come along with them while they desperately try to grasp themselves and the people in their lives and are doomed to fail.
The stories centering women deal with power as well, whether it is about risking their lives to gain the validation that they belong, seeking for someone to acknowledge and take care of them in unconventional ways or getting high off of the experience to direct the everyday violations of women's and girls' boundaries in fiction.

I didn't really enjoy The Girls, but maybe short stories is her strong suit. Very good, well-written, and engaging stories that make the reader feel very uncomfy at certain points. Pick this up if you like Cline, or short stories.

It was alright. I thought the set-ups for most stories was pretty good, they just typically ended without giving much of anything.
