Carol Bird, born on Christmas day, suffers from a terminal illness. On the Christmas that is also to be her 10th birthday, she asks to honor Christ's birthday by giving her Christmas to the poor children next door.

This book reminded me of [b:Little Lord Fauntleroy|275247|Little Lord Fauntleroy|Frances Hodgson Burnett|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348989227s/275247.jpg|1085162] in many ways. Of course, Cedric wasn't an invalid, but he and Carol share similar personalities. I found parts of this book slightly boring, but it's short enough that it didn't matter too much. And the ending is sweet and sad at the same time. If you enjoy classics, this would be nice, quick Christmas read.

The story of a little girl born on Christmas. She's an angel and confine to her bed. There's not a lot here, it's well written, but you can see the ending coming a mile before it is there and it's over sentimental (which normally I like for Christmas stories).

I adore this sweet story! Although it is short, I quickly become attached to the characters. Each little Ruggles is unique and their delight at Christmas is infectious. Carol is a darling, and the whole Bird family is exceptionally interesting. Love it!

Update in 2020: Rereading this for the umpteenth time, I was just giggling and laughing at all the Christmas fun!

Such a sweet short story for Christmas.

I am actually not confident if I have read Dickens' novel, but I know for a fact that I read this one over and over again as a child. I love it, and maudlin sentimentality aside, still find it touching and sweet (albeit a very quick read - I think it's only 80 pages.) I was delighted to find a copy on the FOL shelf and will keep it with my Christmas books.

I am not one for sap, but this is a heartwarming and bittersweet read despite the sappiness. I used to read it at Christmas every year as a kid. I read it to my own children a few years ago but it didn't seem to have the same appeal. I, however, still have a soft spot for it.

old-fashioned "she was too good a child to live" stories may be preachy and corny and saccharine, but I just can't resist them much of the time.
