'If the take of Ralph's life has had no effect on you, if you haven't come to love that good man, it's because I've been an incompetent narrator' right after she spent five pages detailing how he's a pervert and groomer

My main issue with this book is that I had to read it at all.

The Oxford World Classics edition takes great pains to point out that this was Sand's first novel without a collaborator, and it pains me to say: I can tell. The prose here is fine, but I can only stand so much wordcount devoted to completely frivolous detail before I want to DNF. (the fantasy genre being exempt, of course. love that shit)

and... I take so much issue with the ending. I do not care to recount or analyse, but no. I simply don't want to read this kind of content, and I certainly don't appreciate my university's comparative literature course throwing me into this kind of content without warning.

this novel might actually harbour the secrets of the universe or something, but I simply do not care. it wore me down.
