Un biopic de Velazquez cuya picassiana portada me había echado para atrás en más de una ocasión. Craso error porque se trata de una historia compleja y rica organizada en episodios de la vida del Gran Maestro. Alrededor de Velazquez asistimos a un panorama artístico, político, social e histórico del siglo de Oro español, de trazo grueso quizá pero no por ello menos estimulante. Y entre medias pequeñas escenas del futuro donde vemos como las Meninas marcaron a Goya, Dalí, Picaso, Vallejo...
El apartado artístico merece mención aparte, con una impresionante interpretación del maestro clásico en formas y colores propios de Picasso. Geometrias y tonos sacados del Gernika para el Barroco español intercalados con otros estilos modernos para los interludios de otras épocas consiguen un efecto que encumbra este comic.
Un placer visual y un acicate para la curiosidad histórica.

Interesting content, but the narrative was scattered. The change in point of view characters and art styles was disorienting. Not a great book for women.

Este cómic intenta contar la historia de Velázquez a la vez que cuenta la historia de su cuadro más famoso: Las Meninas. Aunque la premisa es interesante, la estructura del cómic en sí es un desastre. Los saltos en el tiempo junto con algunas historias tangenciales complican seguir la historia. El estilo artístico es interesante y algunas partes son bastante graciosas. Sin embargo, la obra en sí deja una sensación de potencial no aprovechado, de objetivo no cumplido. Flojo.

I have seen the painting in person at Museo del Prado. I also visited the Picasso Museum in Barcelona with the paintings inspired by Las Meninas. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the backstory.
The book is wonderful. The only criticisms I have is that it is at times hard to keep the characters straight and that it is sometimes difficult to tell when and where we are in the story. The coloring of the background helps with the timeline, but wasn't enough to prevent me from being taken out of the story a few times.
Overall, I really liked the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in art and/or history.
