This was recommended by a coworker. My husband and I started listening to it while making our maiden voyage across the country with our camper. It was the perfect read for this trip. It was pretty neat to hear about the author's experiences in the various states while we were staying in the same states. We’d listen to it for a little while during our long drives. Loved Charlie’s personality.

Travels with Charley in Search of America is a book unlike no other and is deeply rooted in when it was written. The concept is fantastic and beautiful and at times made me cry and at other times made me laugh. I have never been much of a fan of John Steinbeck's works of fiction, but this work is incredible. Although this book is an incredible examination into America from the perspective of a man who lived through some of the hardest periods in American history, it is still a book that took place in 1960, and published in 1972. Some thoughts & beliefs are outdated, but that's okay because that's sort of the point? This was America in 1960, from the perspective of a man and a dog, and it's beautiful, and it's stunning, and it is, in the original definition of the word, awesome. Very good book!

Steinbeck provides interesting observations concerning mid-century America.
