‘Do you suppose,’ asked the second one, ‘that you are the only living thing that craves with a hungry longing to hear the cuckoo’s note again?’

‘In due time,’ said the third, ‘we shall be homesick once more for quiet water-lilies swaying on the surface of an English stream. But today all that seems pale and thin and very far away. Just now our blood dances to other music.’

just chill vibes the whole way through 🩷

An enchanting tale with wonderfully memorable characters. The story unfolds at a leisurely pace and most is not terribly complicated or exciting, but it is still entertaining to follow. Grahame's descriptions of the river and the Wild Wood are fantastically vivid and it was easy for me to picture the events in my mind. The chapters documenting Toad's wild adventures stemming from his obsession with cars are the most fun thanks to his captivating and impulsive personality. The standalone portions centered on Mole and Ratty pale in comparison, although they do reveal interesting details about both. The depiction of friendship and camaraderie between the main core of characters is what I enjoyed most about this book.

Reading this book feels like having a bath. It's relaxing and light and completely transports you away from the real world. What I wouldn't give to live with Ratty on The River and visit Badger in the Wild Wood.

Also, the illustrations in this edition are gorgeous. Absolutely beautiful.
