This was unfortunately pretty boring for most of the book, especially in comparison to the first two novels. It was closer to a 2.5 stars than 3 but I rounded up.

I just couldn't finish this. The series is far too long - I can't take 41 more hours of my precious time just to have Siv and Dara finally get together (the main reason I'm listening is because I totally ship them). I did enjoy the first two though! It's not terrible but I won't ever return to the Steel and Fire audiobooks.

A lot of reviews for this book indicate a loss of steam, and I can see why: this book is noticeably longer than the previous two and now jumps between three PoVs, of varying importance and interest.

Despite the longer page count, at times it feels as though little progress is being made. However, by the end of the book, the series plot has definitely progressed: we're introduced to new kinds of magic and abilities, new peoples and political situations, and a key tension is resolved but some wrinkles replace them.

I'm still keen to continue the series, after a short break (perhaps I burnt myself out a little, reading the first two books so quickly)!

I think this series will be a solid four star read all the way through at least
