the kind of YA novel whose charm has an expiration date once the reader is over the age of 14

A world of no pain, no sorrow, no anguish, sounds very peaceful right! Yes it is peaceful and calm but devoid of positive emotions and feelings too...
The protagonist who is a young boy, living in an post apocalyptic, perfectly and artificially designed community, finds himself at unease and questioning the meaning of life, he meets an elder, an old, wise person, who grants him the memories of past and how everything was back and back and back...
While designing and setting foundations for the new community, it was was deemed vital to have a colorless, emotionless society, where there is equality and sameness for all... The idea sounds reasonable no wonder, but rather living in the shades of gray, it's more lively to experience white and black, and all the seven shades in between..
It's neither possible nor reasonable to be happy all the time, we have to experience the dark in order to appreciate the light..
Once I started it I couldn't stop, finished it in 2 days.

I have seen this book everywhere in my local bookstore forever and had seen the high ratings that it continues to get. I finally decided to buy it. I didn't know that it was actually a series which helped me understand why it was such a quick read. When you read the book it is so complex, and you don't even realize it until half way through. It is fast paced which kept me interested and will keep ANYONE who reads it hooked.
But what I LOVED about this book is what you learn from it, and I'm not going to give anything away because now I understand why all the teachers assigned it in middle school. (clearly not my own) it is a must read and I can't wait to pick up the 2nd book in the series.

A perfect world that turns out to be not so perfect after all. Utopian or dystopian? You decide.
