As with all of Druon's books....I feel like it takes me a couple of chapters to get into the story. This series is interesting as it is based on the French kings of the 1300s... and you quickly learn that their lives were the original soap operas. Amazing crazy things happen.
For a non native French speaker---the language can be described as advanced intermediate. There are quite a few old terms that are no longer used...and terms that one does not come upon on every day French life. Good to enrich your French vocabulary.

  • Diverse cast of characters? It's complicated

This is Book Four, so of course this is when things start to go wrong. Unfortunately, by the end of this book, there's no one to really root for: everyone left is a terrible person or hopelessly stupid and weak. I credit this with a high rating because it's a sadly believable scenario. Eager for Book Five, because there has to be SOME punishment for these awful people.

This is starting to get a bit old.

Gucci is getting too unbelievable.

But a mildly entertaining way to spend a few hours.

While the book was great, my Overdrive version of the audiobook was arranged in the wrong order... never had that happen before.

Read the English translation, The Royal Succession. all of the novels in this series thus far have been the new English translations made popular via George RR Martin. actually enjoy these more than ASoIaF, though I can definitely see why he was inspired by this series.
