“It’s going to come at you fast, and you’re going to freeze.” For Kit Hobbs, fighting monsters is the family business. But facing unexpected responsibilities she didn’t want is only the beginning. It’s salvaging her family that’s truly going to be the challenge.

I enjoyed the heck out of this. I liked the art and use of color. I appreciated the sibling affection and inter-generational discord. There is little bit of background romance and I liked that it wasn't sullied by needless cheating to give the story artificial grit. There's diversity and appropriate use of mental health services to address the result of generational trauma.

I did think that the introduction of the villain was abrupt and I could have done with a little more backstory. The mother's role was never defined in any significant way and the kaiju just exist; we're not told anything about them. All of this could have been improved with a little more length and time to unfurl. All in all, however, I'll call this one a winner. If you're at all into the mecha genre, check this out.

We Ride Titans is a story with giant robots fighting monsters to protect the population. Said like that, the story isn’t really interesting. But I reassure you. There is far more than that.

The story focuses on the Hobbs family, women and men that sacrificed their lives to protect the inhabitants of New Hyperion for generations. After Dej Hobbs fights a kaiju monster while being drunk, he is dismissed of his privilege of riding a Titan. He is replaced by the family’s child prodigy, Kit, who clearly doesn’t want to be there. She did her best for years to distance herself from Hobb's destiny and her dad calling her back home is not the best news.

We Ride Titans is a great familial drama. There is betrayal, there is jealousy. There is also a long last bound being reconstructed. I generally don’t like giant robot fight stuffs, but the author did a great job developing interesting characters with a complex background. And the art is really cool as well.
