The plot is convoluted as hell and there are plenty of things that make little sense, but I don't care. I just want to tag along after Hazel while she wreaks havoc in Ontario. I do hope she gets rid of that back pain in the next book though - I winced every time she fell down the stairs/was attacked by burly men/dangled from a helicopter.

A dark and twisty story with an unusual and unforgettable police chief in Hazel Micallef.

My second by this pseudonymous author and even better than the first. Pretty much a straightforward detective story, set in very rural Ontario, but extremely well-written and character-driven. The main character, an over middle-aged female police chief, is very compelling and interesting. I hope there are more coming.

I found myself being alternately engrossed and disinterested (a little skimming) in this book, but ended up liking it. I read this book very quickly (over a couple days), so I suppose that speaks somewhat to the fact that I wanted to see what happened. Also, I was happy that in the end Hazel’s staff supported her very wholeheartedly, so that speaks to my investment in the character

Both the first and second Hazel Micallef mysteries are way too long. Each could lose about 100 pages and the tighter books would be far better. No murder mystery, especially police procedural, needs to be over 300 pages. The best noir thrillers are tightly written. These aren't.
