I was so into enjoying the ride instead of getting to figure out our, that I was SHOCKED when I realized what the twist was 60% in. I normally would've caught it muuuuch sooner. But goes to the writing that I was just enjoying reading it instead of solving it. And I blew right through it too! Found at a LFL and remembered I had enjoyed another book from her so I snapped it up. Definitely added Mary Kubica to my Authors list and will be looking out for her other books too!

This was a fast read at the start, however I was onto the
dissociative identity disorder
plot line fairly quickly so that was a bit of a let down in that it felt really set up and breadcrumbed really heavily.
Will being the murderer of everyone
was surprising though. I think the Mouse storyline was also better crafted and less obvious. A few good red herrings otherwise and generally a good pace and interesting story. Would have love a more creative concept though

Fast paced and overall good story. It's been a while since I read a book where I didn't really like any of the main characters. It was fun trying to figure out which of them were really bad and why.

SYNOPSIS:
  • Sadie, a physician, and her husband, Will, have two sons, Tate & Otto. They have relocated from Chicago to Maine. Will’s sister, Alice, recently passed away, and they inherited Alice’s home & have become the guardian of Alice’s teenage daughter, Imogen.
  • Shortly after the family moves in, there was a murder next door.
  • We are also introduced to two other narrators/characters in the story: Camille, who had an affair with Will, and Mouse, a young girl that has an evil stepmother.

MY THOUGHTS
  • Multiple POVs (Sadie, Camille, Mouse, and at the end, Will has a few chapters too)
  • Lots of twists. Although for seasoned readers of the genre, some are a bit predictable.
  • I am a big fan of Kubica’s writing, and I enjoy her writing style. This is the third book I’ve read by her.
  • Excellent pacing. I got through this one in about a day & a half. Satisfying ending.
  • Atmospheric setting. Secluded island off Maine, and Kubica deftly illustrates the old, dreary, musty house to give the house a creepy personality of its own.
  • The adult characters aren’t very likable in this one.
  • Without giving away more, my one gripe is Kubica’s use of mental illness as plot device. Although handled better than most authors, it’s still a personal pet peeve of mine.

TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Suspense with solid ending. Finished in 1.5 days. As a fan of Kubica, I enjoyed this one.

The only reason this got a 2.5 from me is because of the ending.
But the writing of this book felt so stilted - especially in audiobook format. Sometimes I felt like she took an action and found four ways to describe it. And put all four descriptions into the book. There are two plot twists - the first I saw coming the second I did not. Could have been a great thriller if the writing had not been so poor
