This was such a joyful re-read. For a book that deals with themes such as enslavement, sexual abuse, privilege and so on, there's just something so deeply kind and humanist in this story. It's not that it's not angry, it is angry, but it's also optimistic without feeling naive. I don't think it's perfect - it feels like a few threads could have been developed more fully, but there's no space for that as action moves forward - but Breq is just so lovely to read about, and now I can look forward to my re-read of Ancillary Mercy (with characters I've missed).

My original review: So is the next book going to be called "Ancillary Mercy"? (Kind of can't wait.)

A great follow-up, engrossing and compelling... but the Kindle edition could really have used better editing. One missing space or typo I get, but there were a good few.

Not as sci-fi adventurous as the first book. Instead focuses on concepts like freedom, liberty, slavery, justice, and humanity. Very little action, but it still plays out nicely.

'What is justice Citizen? Where did justice lie, in that entire situation? We speak as though it's a simple thing, a matter of acting properly, as though it's nothing more than afternoon tea and the question only who takes the last pastry. So simple. Assign guilt to the guilty.'

'Just how good of a citizen does one have to be in order to have water and air and medical help? And do your neighbors know you hold such a low opinion of them?'
