Marcus has quite a bit of egg on his face after the success of LLMs after the publication of this book, but many of his ideas and critiques of AI research are still good for thought.

Has its ups and downs, but overall very interesting

I kind of ruined it for me by reading some of the negative comments on here. Therefore, I cannot say if the first few chapters are really annoyingly pessimistic or the reviews have blown it out of proportion for me.

So yeah, the first few chapters are a bit tough to get through, but it gets better. The chapters on the technology behind deep learning and the limitations of current AI techniques were just deep enough for a layman. So yeah, overall really interesting and insightful, but more often than not something was missing.

A must read for folks interested in or working in AI.
That being said, for someone like me who's already on the same page as Gary and Ernest, parts of it felt very slow and "yes, yes, I know". The epilogue also did the traditional popsci book thing I hate, I.e., "With [technology] the future will be MaGiCaL and we'll have flying cars!"
But again, I realize I'm not the target audience there.
