somewhat less viscerally moving than the prose novel but still a masterful work

Only reason I didn’t do 5 stars is because it’s an adaptation, which made me a little anxious that I was missing things/not getting the whole story… even though that’s not really rational!

I, embarrassingly enough, have never read Kindred (or any of Octavia E Butler’s other works). As soon as I learned there was a graphic novel version, I immediately checked the ebook out from my library.

I’m actually really glad that I happened to read this first as a graphic novel because the subject matter is really tough to read about. Even though this format allows for more imagery of what’s going on… for me, personally, longer descriptions would have been infinitely worse. Kindred is amazing in plot and the questions it poses (I think I would have killed Rufus, who cares if I die in the process), but it’s incredibly hard to come to terms with at times.

This riveting tale takes us on a journey with Dama, as the modern day woman gets transported back in time to constantly save the life of her ancestor.

As her world spins and she believes for sanity is dissipating, we take a trip through history to explore the violence and slavery in the USA of the 18th Century.

Reading through this graphic novel, you can’t help but feel the pain of the black society during this time and the obligation Dana feels to save as many as she can during her trips backwards.

I had never read a Octavia Butler novel before and was hesitant. I picked up the graphic novel as I believed it would be a nice introduction and relatively easy way to read one of her novels. As I began reading I realized, I was missing the depth of the novel, that I may not miss if I had read the novel in the first place. (I’ll be buying the novel shortly to see if I get those pieces I believe I’m missing).

I recommend this book for anyone looking to dip their toes into an Octavia Butler novel. As recommend for anyone who enjoys graphic novels and history knowledge.

I’m so interested in graphic novel adaptations as an emerging genre in literature and seeing how stories that originate as prose evolve and explode as visual works. I need to reread the original Octavia Butler novel now, because this was such a vivid reading experience. The novel’s use of color, illustrative style, and pace are exquisite, and there is a new reckoning that comes with facing the visuals of this story as you read. In my initial reading of the novel, it was easy to take shortcuts in envisioning and really reflecting about the most intense moments of this story and the history it discusses, but there is no way around the reality of brutality and abuse and grief in this adaptation, which makes it such a important, if difficult piece. Highly recommend.
