Wow, didn’t think Id like this book this much! I enjoyed getting wrapped up in upper crust Georgian England and the romantic drama.
What was surprising was its also a good character study. Seeing how all the sisters interact over the similar situations they find themselves in was interesting. The most striking example of course is how Jane, Liz, and Lydia deal with marriage. We also see things like different types of relationships and their successfulness (Mr. Bennett/Ms. Bennet is unhealthy, Charlotte/Mr. Collins for money and necessity, Liz/Mr. Darcy for intellectual compatibility, Jane/Mr. Bingley for personality match, etc.).
Finally Austen’s writing is precise and elegant, much more so than modern writing Ive found. Maybe this is just a 19th century thing, but it seems like they drew from a larger pool of dictation than we do today.

I read this about seven years ago, and again now (Feb 2019) to take part in the Ardently Austen Book Club. I have watched the BBC mini-series a few times over the last several years so I was very familiar with the characters and events when I picked it up again. This in no way lessened the enjoyment of the re-read. I adore this novel. Austen’s wit makes it exceedingly enjoyable.
