Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. I love a psychological thrillers so I was really interested in this one. To be honest, I got about 30% in and I just was not super invested in the story. I really wanted to finish but I just found myself lacking the motivation to finish. I might give it another shot in the future as I hate not finishing a book, but right now I won't be finishing.

i was torn between giving this book anywhere from 2 stars and 3.5 stars.

i’m no mastermind, i’m exclusively good at taking the ACT, but i did predict the big reveal less than 10% of the way into the book.

i felt like this was like little league t-ball where id hit the ball with the bat and then my coach would be like telling me to run to first base and then i’d get a clementine at home base. i actually don’t know if that’s a perfect analogy- i never did tball. i was, however, dragged to my brothers practices and games because i like 6 so i spent my time playing animal crossing on my pink 3DS while id eat a blue juicy drop pop.

back to the review!! this book was so cheesy too. like COR-NY!! it did feel like age authentic a bit which i thought was cool. like i could see these characters being at my school (maybe bc i pictured their high school to be my high school?) our trophy case is not anywhere close enough to the principals office though. so…

i know i just complained this book was cheesy but i ate up those tucker and blythe scenes oh yall dont even know. when she was confessing her feelings and he literally was unable to put together the pieces like yes tucker go give us nothing!!

gabrielle killing a man and then going MIA is wild im sorry. i GET she was kidnapped and having a crisis but OK????

this book was trying to do a lot and i feel like they wanted a sequel so bad but what else is there to do now that the big reveal happened? like i guess it could be about finding tanya and tuckers mom but how does that work when there’s no like big thread? i guess that’s book 2 and then book 3 is the downfall of the big company. also the subplot about cassidy almost getting sent to conversion camp was like elaborate for no reason? i’m all for representation but then we never saw cassidy again??

blythe was fine she’s a teensy bit me coded but i’m 98% sure i didn’t get my memories wiped and im now living in an experiment to heal my trauma.

tanya ate. best character. she was sooooo cheesy tho. her answering “where did you come from?” with “hell” girl get your ass back in the sit com you came out of.

this book had a few i guess tacky self aware moments that im like “ok that’s only fun if you give it a line not a paragraph” but again i felt like my hand was being held.

the ending actually was insane? why did we need to KILL CALLUM OFF?? and then whoopsie! we accidentally shot devon! “honey! i shot the devon!” ahh ending.

everyone just casually being killers is wild. like IM AWARE THIS IS FICTION. but this all just feels a wee bit super illegal to happen. i’m still very confused about how devon was the control in this thing. i need a second book just so this can all be wrapped up.

despite this rather insane plot, it was a very nice easy read to have while i gave up in the middle of the ap calc mock exam and on a random saturday in may :)
