A really successful second novel. Totally consuming. Looking back at it, I realize book 2 has quite a lot of plot points but there’s enough space within the story to let the characters breath- it’s well balanced.  I really enjoyed watching Rin learn to control her power and reconnect with old schoolmates . There’s some joy mixed in with the heartache but this is still a war novel and I was very tense each battle hoping my favourite characters wouldn’t die. The ending was compelling too, I’ve already got my paws on book 3!

rf kuang did it AGAIN with this book im in shock….
such a great sequel to the poppy war, it was so well paced & i was enthralled with the story constantly. the last hundred pages or so RIPPED MY HEART OUT i still cant believe it……
kuang manages to perfectly & convincingly detail a story from such a limited third person perspective; its so hard to look at all angles of this story when its all told from rin’s pov. never been a huge fan of war topics in my reading selections but this one & its predecessor were absolutely astonishing. 5/5 stars Again from such a talented author

(my copy had 654 pages)

The book is quite strong for much of it. However, in the tail end with excessive large battle scenes you lose a lot of the excellent character dynamics of more one on one battles, conversations and interrogation scenes that are Kuang’s strong suit. The Dragon Republic is strongest when focused on character dynamics in the face of the greater war politics. The inequalities and bigotries shown by different groups is quite prevalent throughout the book. Rin’s self hate toward her ethnicity is quite apparent through the narrative too. The book does a really good job of showing that all supposed great leaders ultimately have selfish interests. Some of the added backstory elements are really intriguing. The real life historical background references are very apparent if you know your stuff but it’s also got enough of a veneer of fictionalizing if you don’t. This middle book is a slight step back from “The Poppy War” but not by much and it’s mostly due to pacing hiccups. Please note the role that alcohol and drug use plays in the narrative if you are sensitive to such content. There’s a lot of it.
