This was just as good as the first book! I love Kuang's perspective and how she intertwined history with fantasy. I love that Kuang isn't afraid to be relentless, just when you've recovered from one plot twist another is thrown at you and they're done so intelligently. I love how graphic and intense things were, I think the amount of betrayals and deaths in both the first and (mainly the) second books really shows that in war nothing is off limits. Just because it's a fantasy series doesn't mean everything becomes mystified and magical, it still maintains the grittiness it needed. I absolutely adored Kuang for dragging the West, those sections had me cackling. One of the best fantasy series I've read by far. Kuang doesn't hold back at all, and I loved it!!

A really successful second novel. Totally consuming. Looking back at it, I realize book 2 has quite a lot of plot points but there’s enough space within the story to let the characters breath- it’s well balanced.  I really enjoyed watching Rin learn to control her power and reconnect with old schoolmates . There’s some joy mixed in with the heartache but this is still a war novel and I was very tense each battle hoping my favourite characters wouldn’t die. The ending was compelling too, I’ve already got my paws on book 3!

This sequel starts slow but builds into a war epic that rivals the first book in this series. The rich lore, conflicted character motivations, and the horrifying historical recounts of war made this story difficult to put down. Grotesque and hopeless, but an incredibly important work of fantasy.
