I was saving this book as I knew I was going to love it but it even surpassed my high expectations. I couldn’t put it down and became engrossed in Grace’s honest recount of her life so far. The talk of her youth was so nostalgic to me; I wish I had read a book like this growing up which normalises all the things that we shame ourselves for. She is witty, relatable, powerful and inspiring and I will remember her story. For me, it perfectly encapsulates the mess that is growing up fuelled by jealousy, rejection, bad mistakes and just trying to fit in.
The parts about her family, growing up surrounded by politics and Tony Blair just trotting on in to make a cup of tea were fascinating and her commentary on how that all felt as a child were bloody hilarious.
The book does cover some difficult topics like misogyny, body image, sexual assault, sexual health, mental health etc... but it’s a book about shame so I expected that. But there are some heartwarming stories too, highlighting how strong her support system of friends is and reminds us that women need to support women! ❤️
