I was expecting this book to be erotica, like some of the previous ones in the series are, but it turned out to be a rather cute opposites-attract romance between a burly Old Earth pilot and the small New World medic who treated her when her spacecraft crashed on Royal.

I enjoyed seeing the MCs from the previous books reappear in this one, getting a feel for the whole family/community. This is the last book in the series and even though the stories didn’t all work for me, all in all, it was entertaining. Safe with Me is the fluffiest of the lot and a nice way to end. 3.5⭐️

I received a copy from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

These books are like candy - easy to read, usually a fun time if not the most memorable and full of happy queers.

This one starts off really interesting only to taper off in the excitement. While I wouldn't say it feels like instalove (both are simply quick to act on their attraction), I feel like it went too smoothly and the transition from strangers to your-friends-and-siblings-are-like-my-new-family went came up quickly. Fay and Havi are actually not the most memorable characters: a workaholic and an injured refugee who are fairly isolated and don't really do anything aside from (finding) work.

I was actually more interested in the surrounding subplots: Havi's refugee status and the situation with the stolen, malfunctioning plane and Fay's jealous work friend which took a backseat until the last 30 pages to rush through an action scene and the ending.

I don't know why but I never quite got on board with the sexual subplot of the story. It's not really written like Havi comes in and magically fixes the situation but it still ends up feeling this way? I think it would have been more believable if Fay actually had communication problems when she is, in fact, more upfront with her previous partners than with Havi, which makes the solution (the first that came to my mind) not as impactful. While I can objectively understand her anguish and fear, I found it hard to sympathize with the way she was written.

I  received an advanced reading copy from Carina Press through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
