- Overall I have mixed feelings about this book. I really liked the concept of a Spanish swordsman for hire and the story. However it quickly became a struggle to read due to there being so many names and words I had to look up. I did really like the plot when the captain was at the theatre and has prince charles fight along side him but from that point in the story to the end wasn’t a lot of plot/ most of the story was over. I found out that this is a series and was interested to see if I would want to read the second one. I think I will keep with just reading the first novel.

This is a great swashbuckling work. Lots of fun to read. For a tween boy it would be perfect, especially one who had trouble or did not like to read. I'm going to ask the Abilene library to pick up the whole series, but I won't ILL the next work.

Weirdly paced, at times interesting and at times painfully boring. It can be fun, but nothing stands out plot or character wise about this book. I have no interest in reading any more in this series. It's at least short

Part historical fiction, part swashbuckling adventure, there's a pretty good story here that keeps you guessing for awhile. However, the narrative frequently gets lost in run-on sentences. I enjoyed the title character, who we see from the perspective of his young teenage ward, although we don't really learn much about the boy. Life in 17th century Madrid, along with its politics, religion, and culture, is vividly and believably described. The ending leads to a sequel, but I'm not sure I'm interested enough to follow the captain further.
