This book could’ve easily been 100-200 pages shorter. It kept dragging on and on by the end.

Oh how disappointing. The Book Thief was fantastic and this was ... not. I couldn’t get into it. The style and narrator’s jumping around didn’t lend itself to drawing you in. It was all jumbled and that was too bad because the underlying story of family and grief could have been a good one.

Torn on this one's rating because I hate giving low ratings to authors I admire, especially one with such a delicious accent. I wasnt invested in this one as much as I thought I would be, to be honest. There were parts that were wonderful and beautifully written, but you have to get through the grey areas to find that beauty. As much as I loved listening to his voice, I think this would have been better had I read it myself rather than listening.

So this book was LONG. I wavered between 3 and 4 stars. And I think it's really a 3 1/2. This book was a little disappointing. I think it would have definitely been a solid 3, but for the end. It really did tie almost everything up. But in the end there were just long pieces of this story that I felt were not necessary and could have been said FASTER or left out. And in the end I was left with some questions...why did Clay feel like he killed C Novac? And honestly, I had trouble figuring out the symbolism of the bridge. I guess I will be online reading reviews to figure some of this out. That said, I loved the characters. They were rich and deep and I had pictures of them in my head. And the author did a good job of hiding the ending. It was a surprise to me.

So after giving two stars to The Book Thief and DNFing his latest, I think it's time to accept Markus Zusak is not my cup of tea.
