Sweet and charming characters, simple yet earnest illustrations.

I just can't get on board with the parent loses a child and becomes an evil scientist trope. After all the care taken with other characters this felt like a slap to grieving parents.

No one I know who has lost a child (including my own parents) became evil - parents want to keep the memory of their child, grieve the child, and figure out how to stay present for their living children. Nothing can replace the loss. This trope is tired and cheap - and takes away from what was otherwise a compelling story of how we treat our technology.

Delightful: the book equivalent of a hot cup of tea or a good hug.

The story felt a bit rushed to me, but I really enjoyed it.

I went into this graphic novel without many expectations, but it ended up wowing me. This is a beautiful story that not only discusses topics of AI, humanity, and consciousness, but also shows characters overcoming the emotional abuse of narcissistic parents. The narrative also treats everyone with humanity and care in a way that's really touching.
And I of course loved watching the sweet romance unfold as well ♡

A sweet and empowering story, while also asking deep questions about the nature of “artificial” sentience and the love and empathy it takes to leave an abusive parent.

I hope this book stands the test of time, if civilization is lucky enough to live to a time where an android and AI can be a romantic partner. If you like this book, give Detroit Become Human the video game a try!

-4/19 edit: i can't stop thinking about this book so I'm giving it a 5 and definitely already want to re-read it. My partner and I read this together, and it makes it special for me.
