I went into this graphic novel without many expectations, but it ended up wowing me. This is a beautiful story that not only discusses topics of AI, humanity, and consciousness, but also shows characters overcoming the emotional abuse of narcissistic parents. The narrative also treats everyone with humanity and care in a way that's really touching.
And I of course loved watching the sweet romance unfold as well ♡

A sweet and empowering story, while also asking deep questions about the nature of “artificial” sentience and the love and empathy it takes to leave an abusive parent.

This had me ALL THE WAY in my feelings!

This is the story of Clem and Kye. Clem just moved to Mars to study AI under the person who created Kye. There is absolutely a friendship and romance story in this, but it's much more than that. This story is about dealing with trauma and getting out of abusive relationships, about realizing your own humanity. The story is also about community in so many ways. There's the need for connection, the issues that loneliness creates, and how community care can actually work.

I read this with 3 other graphic novels in the same day and, while they were all incredible in their own ways, this one just really got to me. It was my favorite of the day (and a contender for my favorite graphic novel of the year).

I read it cover to cover but I don’t really understand how the title played into this. That said, it was a great story. I especially love Xu’s art style. And the coloring choices made.

To be fair, robot/human relationships are always kind bleh to me, so my personal bias definitely ate into my opinion on this. I just can’t get how the mouths can work re:kissing?? Or sex (which was implied as a possibility?!)????

All that said, the abuse storyline was well done. I appreciated how Clem compartmentalized and how SENA was able to help her through triggers and bad thought patterns. Also loooved Nadiya was tentative and waiting for Clem to mention Lin’s poor behavior and then immediately launched into shit-talking her. What a mood! I always do that with coworkers! Ya gotta feel out the mood before talking crap!

Anyway, enjoyable but missed the mark a bit with me.

Clementine Chang has landed her dream job on Mars with Dr. Marcella Lin, working on Artificial Intelligence. On her first day of work, she meets Dr. Lin’s AI assistant, Kye, who is modeled after humans. Clem is used to robots, but she can tell that there’s something different about Kye. Something that seems more human than most robots.

As Kye and Clem start to collaborate on a project, it’s clear that there is chemistry there. However, Dr. Lim isn’t happy about Kye’s new desire for independence and tries to interfere. But Kye also causes Clem to question everything she knows about AI. If Kye has emotions, where does that draw the line between AI and humans? And doesn’t that mean that Kye should be able to make his own choices?

Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for an advanced copy of The Infinity Particle by Wendy Xu to review! Wendy Xu is a favorite graphic novel creator of mine, and I couldn’t wait to read this one. So happy that it lived up to all my expectations.

It feels like, in the last couple of years, there has been an insurgence in fiction that focuses on AI and robots and how they relate to humanity. Not to say that hasn’t existed before, but I’ve just noticed so much more of it recently. It’s such an interesting subject to explore, especially as we think about emotions and characterization and humanity in general.

The art in this book is breathtaking, as is to be expected from Wendy Xu. There are just some really gorgeous panels and pages, with such an interesting color palette. I loved the way Xu used the format and the colors to portray emotions, and to portray the changes that were happening in Kye throughout the book. It just worked so well.

The characters were also well-developed and rounded out, even some of the side characters. Personally, I think this could be a series, because I would totally keep reading about Kye and Clementine. They could even go on adventures in space! I would totally be down with reading that.

All in all, I absolutely loved this graphic novel, and I can’t wait for more people to read it come August.
