I had initially given this book a 4 star star rating when I did my mini “this is what I rated it, and this is when a review will be up.” but then today when I sat down to write the review, I realized it was so non-outstanding in reality that I had to really wrack my brain just to recall specific details of it… and I had just read it yesterday. So, with that being said, it obviously wasn’t that great of a book apparently.
In terms of how this book measures up against the others I’ve read in a decidedly over-saturated (not that I’m complaining) zombie-novel market, Pembroke Sinclair’s Life After the Undead has a few key points that will appeal more to those who aren’t huge zombie fans. Number 1.) It’s more post-apocalyptic than a true zombie fic. I mean, zombies do feature, but they actually take a backseat to most of the action. Number 2.) There’s a romance that isn’t exactly insta-love, which is something that is way too common in the post-apocalyptic books with zombies in it. Number 3.) The main character is a girl that actually has a bit of common sense. She doesn’t always do what she should be doing at the moment, but she actively seeks ways to help, and she’s not afraid to do what’s right even if it might not be the easiest thing to do.
I liked that there was a broad range of characters. Everything from the quiet, sturdy survivalist to the hard-nosed power-grabbing tyrant, and all the shades in between. Liet, the leader of the place Krista ends up, is creepy. I don’t doubt that he’s related to Krista, but at the same time, its very obvious that he doesn’t think their relationship as family is close enough to keep them from having a different sort of more personal relationship.
Overall, this was a good read, it just wasn’t an outstanding one, and I’d recommend it even if its not particularly memorable.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
