This was literally such a cute little read! An alien learns to be human but sees the good in us! He just wants to love ❤️

Alexa, play “Loving the Alien” by Velvet Revolver.

What a unique and weird little book! Our main character is a Vonnadorian alien who was sent to Earth with a particular mission, tasked to him by “the hosts.” He is given Andrew Martin’s body (but not his mind) and must destroy the professor’s newest work and anyone who knows about it. But what happens when he starts to care for those he is meant to destroy? Haig shows how hard it can be just to be human. He gives the reader rules for making life a little better and tools to practice empathy and compassion. Maybe the aliens are already among us, and they just couldn’t resist being human.

A charming look at humanity through the eyes of a character with only an academic (and not terribly accurate) understanding of it. Though the writing occasionally seems a touch drunk on its own sense of wonder, the full effect is still a hopeful story that leaves you feeling like maybe our species isn’t so bad, after all.

The author seems very pleased with his own discovery of humanity to the point he beats us over the head with some plotless aphorisms for a chapter. The framework of the story gets lost, the characters beyond the main character are shallow and get little development beyond the same few qualities. Clearly trying for something inspirational or moving but it ends up feeling like cheap candy, with about as much depth.
