But it's the delving deeper into history part which had my interest. Like Illéa's diary and the rebels looking for it, Gregory Illéa turning out to be a jerk who forced his daughter to marry an old prince just so that he could be a king, inventing the caste system to place his loyal followed higher and his enemies lower, yada yada. Kinda cool, I wanna see where this goes.
Now as for the characters, a good majority of them are flat to a t. America was more annoying in this one, and I did not like her jumping back and forth with the two love interests. Poor Marlee, though, I liked her. Maxon's scars just made me hate Clarkson even more.
Aaand it ended in the cliff-hanger, so guess I'll binge the next one too

okay let me just put this out there, like i said in my previous review about the selection, the selection series will forever hold a place in my heart as it is the first series to get me into reading. but as time went on & the sun still rose & the earth still turned, i got older. meaning, this book wasn’t the great, perfect, solid 5 stars it used to be.
honestly, i find america — the main character — quite irritating & very hypocritical. like the lack of character development physically hurts. like yes girl, give us nothing. and don’t get me wrong, i love reading about unlikable characters — i rlly do, it makes it more interesting imo, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t bother me sometimes. and trust me i get it, i really do, especially being the same age as america, but the lack in self confidence she has pisses me off in all honesty. like miss girl i get being nervous & anxious & shit but the constant comparisons bt her & every other girl needs to stop. last thing, she also had the audacity to become jealous & pissed @ maxon for going out w other women (when america deadass told him that she didn’t know if she was all in) while she’s sneaking around with aspen. like how does she think she’s better than him? like honey,,, you’re not. literately everyone knows that maxon is deadass so head over heels in love w your stubborn ass & once you tell him you’re all in he’d stop the selection process so fast. like girl it’s your fault. sorry not sorry. :/
and aspen, jesus christ that boy. he very much gives me jacob from twilight vibes — very entitled & egotistical. it’ just pains me to read. he’s very much, “pick me. choose me. love me.” yknow what i’m saying?
last thing, america is very much a “pick me girl” & i think it just needs to be said.
