Interesting story.

I liked the suspenseful feeling throughout the book. Profiling killers sounds like a complex (but interesting) job. The main thing I didn't like was the language and some of the strange lingo (ex. Lifer juice).

With this being the 3rd day of no school due to snow and the polar vortex, I decided to tackle this one. It’s an Amazon First Reads pick so a freebie. I love the premise....an FBI-type but set in London and the heroine is out to catch a serial killer. Meh....this one was just ok for me. It had some exciting nail biting moments and led the reader on a bit of a goose chase but things wrapped up quickly in the end. I also thought some of the writing was weird. The characters used some interesting dialogue and big words I’d never heard before; it almost seemed like the author was trying to be unique and clever but it fell flat. Don’t try so hard next time. This is the first book in a new series; I won’t be reading the next. ⭐️⭐️1/2

“I've been studying signature murderers for years. I know what drives them. I know what makes them tick. And I know that, like me, they're also profilers.”

I always try reading series in order, but sometimes mistakes are made and I didn't realize Snakes And Ladders was the third book of a series when I got a copy on Netgalley. After loving that book and my first meeting with Ziba MacKenzie, I made a vow to myself to pick up the first two books ASAP while memories were still fresh... With the bonus that I would have one less series to catch up with in 2020 afterwards. Blood For Blood started with a bang and while this first book shows just how much this series has grown over time, I still had a great time reading it. It's a quick, fast and entertaining read and I managed to read it in no time at all! While it's true that I thought that Ziba was a bit too full-on, bitchy, arrogant and too eager to prove to everyone just how tough she is in Blood For Blood, I still liked her profiler angle and it was interesting to see where her character started and how she evolved over time. I also had some doubts about the credibility of certain aspects and plot twists, including the treasurehunt and certain actions of Ziba, but if you like your thrillers entertaining, fast and full of action you will find it quite easy to overlook those. I definitely didn't realize hours had passed while I was flying through Blood For Blood!

Really well done. I like the characters, especially the main as she works through getting her life back on track. Good plotting. Hope the next one is as good.

Almost 3. I found the heroine almost likeable, but I think the military tough girl seemed forced and too many red herrings muddied up the story I think.

It has been a while since a book has intrigued me as much as this one had. I am fairly good at being able to call who the murderer is but this one had me guessing, then second guessing only to revert to my original suspect. And still I was incorrect. However, it wasn't because the murderer was random or completely unforeseen but because of the way the story was written and the focus on different details that are then disregarded as new ones come to light that I focused exactly where the author intended and never strayed from the path she laid out. I was delighted to be so completely engrossed in a story that it left my mind no room to wander from the world she created.

Also, it was refreshing that the main character is a pretty bad-ass well written female. I adore how confident in herself she is while still having many of the flaws any real human has to contend with, that just made her 100% believable and easy to relate to despite the lack of similarities in my personal life.

There were also enough details that alluded to the deranged nature of the crimes with falling into the total ick territory. I appreciate how the author chose to handle the child abuse scenes as well. Again, giving enough details to paint the picture and cause emotional turmoil without going to far. (the situation is disgusting and wrong but I am unable to emotional handle detailed scenes in my daily reading, so I am thankful with the care she took in portraying such heavy content)

Scary how real it all felt but I am genuinely looking forward to the next book in the series.
