This book had all the good vibes. Queer representation, Latinx inspired fantasy, found family, strong warrior women, a little bit of romance and finding your true self. This book is very YA. It did have some pacing issues but it is a short book, so easy to get through. I really enjoyed meeting all of the different side character through out the book. The book did end without tying anything up really, but it ended leaving me wanting more. And thankfully book two is on its way!

Just my initial thoughts after finishing at 4am:

This story had me locked in from the beginning! I loved the cast of characters and the setting. The world fill rich and defined but not too much is revealed at once. A good balance of exposition and moving the story forward.

There was enough tension (plot and between characters) to keep me turning pages, but so many sweet moments between characters that really balanced out the story.

Enjoyed the significance of names and naming and the way culture is explored group to group.

Can we have a moment for the gorgeous cover as well?!? I mean… it really is emotional and evocative especially upon finishing the book!

This didn't wow me but it did interest me and tug on some of my emotions. I'll be reading the next book for sure as most of my enjoyment from this first installment came from things to come (ie the setting up of character relationships, subplots, etc)

It was a little rough specifically because of the in-world hatred of 'others' (reading this when multiple genocides are ongoing in Gaza, Sudan, Congo, etc). So I'm hoping a lot of the characters do some personal growth in book 2.

Wonderful world building, excellent character depictions and growth, and an epic tale. I did not see one of the twists at the end, but it makes so much sense! I knocked a half star off for a grammatical error and a spelling error, but I really enjoyed this book. It sucks you in and doesn't let go.

I loved the blend of English and Spanish, and the use of magic in this world. I know the second book is out now, and I am very excited to read it!

In general, I enjoyed this book and the unique premise. Unfortunately, I don’t think this book was edited at all. There was some expositional elements repeated when they didn’t need to be, and there were a ridiculous amount of typos and missing or incorrect punctuation marks. There were also quite a few run-on sentences. The obvious lack of editing took me out of the story often.
