The Bright family farms a vast tract of land in remote western Queensland, a territory that you need to know well and to respect in order to survive. Middle brother Cameron is found dead of exposure in the Outback, having seemingly inexplicably wandered away from his well-stocked car. Tragic accident or the result of something more sinister? Jane Harper does a good job of crafting a sense of place—I could really feel the oppressive heat and the big skies of the Australian landscape. The Lost Man is more family drama than thriller, however. Things unfold slowly and whodunnit is easy to guess. The book could still have worked well as a character study if the characters other than the POV one, Nathan, had been better drawn (and if the kids had been at all convincing as children). Readable, but not a page turner.

Jane Harper is the absolute best there is these days when it comes to Australian mystery novels, set in towns that feel so authentic. Shanahan makes for the perfect narrator for her audiobooks as well, with each character so distinctly unique. Highly recommend if you want to read or listen to something you can't step away from.

This book captures and utilises the mystery of the Australian landscape beautifully in both the setting and characters. The novel deals with important issues such as loneliness, mental health and abuse from a unique and immersive perspective. Gripping until the very end.
