For the second time Styles was to house a crime. Time would prove or disprove that assertion, but if it were true, it behooved us to forestall that happening.

It was the 24th of November 2021 when I first began this series and here I am on the 4th of April 2022 finally bringing it to its end. It has been a journey. I’ve loved some, I’ve hated others and I’ve completely ignored a select few but all in all it was a wonderful experience.

Let me quote One, Two, Buckle My Shoe: “You think that quite untenable?” Fogg said slowly: “I’m afraid I do. You’re suggesting the mysterious X. Where do we look for him?”

“The Curtain” also referred to ‘Poirot’s Last Case’ is the final instalment chronologically in the Hercule Poirot series. Our series started with Hastings and Poirot’s first meeting in The Mysterious Affair at Styles and here we are years later with Hastings and Poirot once more reuniting at Styles to solve one more case.

Poirot is old now (Agatha Christie’s timeline is weird because from my math, he’s over a 100 years old). He is crippled with arthritis and he propels himself about in a wheelchair. His once plump frame has fallen in and he is a thin little man with a face lined and wrinkled. Despite his physicality holding him back, his brain is as sharp as ever and he has recruited Hastings to help discover this mysterious X who is responsible for countless murders and whom, Poirot fears, may strike again.

I loved this. The murder was engaging, I was piecing together clues together with Hastings, some I even solved before him and I swear the 57%-59% part of the book had my heart racing in fright. I could not believe what almost happened. And the ending?! Beautiful. I cried so hard reading this.

As before, Hastings and Poirot’s friendship was still as beautiful as it was in the previous books they were together and I will definitely be re-reading books with them together in future. And now, all I can say is goodbye to Hercule Poirot, Hastings and all the people we’ve met along the way.

Our first hunt was here - and our last...
They were good days.
Yes, they have been good days…

Now this is what you call reading a series out of order - this last case of Poirot is only the 3rd I've read, and while I would NOT recommend anyone else following this pattern, I'm glad it worked out this way for me. I feel like knowing how it all ends will lend something (clarity? insight? I don't know) to my reading of the earlier books.

It's another affair at Styles and quite a convoluted one. I did not love the ending and found Hastings to be almost too idiotic. Still, the writing was convincing and straightforward and true to character, and as far as ends to series go, I think this one was excellent.
