I wanted to like it, but it was a struggle to get through.

This book is not about 9-11-01 like some people would think. It takes place in that time so the background settings describe the incidents of that day and how people processed it. It was a book about a relationship strained.

It was really hard to read, it was torture because the writer does an amazing job of getting you into the stories, into the characters that I was feeling everything that was going on. It was really hard to me to read and I finally skipped about 30 pages to get to the end and the end was horrible.

But you know what it's a real freaking story where characters go through horrible things and emotional and physical pain and I just didn't have the stomach for it. It caused me pain. It made me think and the author shouldn't be faulted that my pretty little brain didn't want to feel so dang much. It was just too much for me personally.

I really loved the quiet, stark prose. Some might find the story slow, but I thought the pacing was appropriate. There were some awkward moments (Bausch’s best moments aren’t sex scenes). Still, I was drawn into this book more deeply than I expected and found myself very invested in the outcome.
