Hands-down, the most impactful thing about The Book Thief is Death's narration. The personification of a powerful force allows a first-person perspective full of flavor, an omniscient perspective that can wander far from the main characters of the book, and a close-third perspective of the individuals whose lives are being focused.
I will also praise the end of the book; the final chapter begins discussing "the day Liesel Meminger's life ended" and leads you to believe the book will end with the complete destruction of Himmel street. However, the epilogue masterfully shows how life goes on and even the "end of the world" has something after it, and you are able to rebuild and find happiness if you choose to stick around and do so. It's short, but concise, and incredibly effective.
This book was recommended to my class by an English teacher in high school, in either my freshman or sophomore year. More than seven years later, I could not possibly endorse it more.
